  1. Quick Write: List all of the words you can think of that refer the the "claim" of a text. What other words are used to say "claim"?
  2. Write the definition of "claim"
3. Rhetorical Precis Peer Review of "Speech to the Virginia Convention"
  • Work with your partner to label the parts of the rhetorical precis by sentence and rank each sentence from 1(D)-4(A):
    • Sentence 1: title, author, genre, author's credentials, claim
    • Sentence 2: Four things that support the claim, four pieces of evidence, four pieces of elaboration (note- the writer may have added more sentences because of evidence and elaboration)
    • Sentence 3: Author's purpose and in order to
    • Sentence 4: tone and diction and audience
  • Rank the precis overall from 1-4 and state your reasons as specifically as possible (at least two reasons)
